CIAT-LATINDADD-SII Chile co-hosted the XIII Regional Meeting with Tax Administrations on International Taxation
In a bid to exchange experiences and ideas on how to tackle the evolving challenges of international tax regulations and foster stronger regional cooperation, members from tax administrations, international organizations, nonprofits, and other experts mainly from across Latin America and the Caribbean met in Santiago de Chile, for the XIII Regional Meeting on International Taxation. This two-day event focused on “Articulating Cooperation and Strengthening Regional Response to the Evolution and Reconfiguration of International Tax Norms and the Challenges of Mobilizing Domestic Resources”.
The meetings featured a range of presentations and roundtable panels on global fiscal cooperation, the advances and challenges of the UN Framework Convention, tackling illicit financial flows, the taxation of services, the implementation of the Punta del Este Declaration, integrated risk management systems, identifying complex tax structures, the latest proposals pertaining to crypto asset taxation, and more.
Among the main conclusions of this Meeting are: the importance to assess potentially harmful arrangements and structures with the aim to include recommendations to limit their effect on international standards, the need to improve cooperation as per the items outlined in the Punta del Este Declaration, the advantages of coordinating regional efforts to analyse the opportunity to implement international recommendations (i.e.: Pillar 2 BEPS, Pillar 1 Amount B BEPS, etc.), the advantages of assessing tax expenditures, and the need to evaluate the treatment of international transactions that involve services in the domestic tax legislation as well as double tax conventions. A summary document outlining the conclusions and recommendations that emerged from the discussion is expected soon.
This meeting marks another significant step in the global effort to ensure a fairer and more effective international tax system. CIAT thanks the SII of Chile, LATINDADD and it’s partners for their part in this endeavour, as well as all of those who participated in this event to make it a success.
