Latin American countries discuss Taxation for Mining and the Extractive Sector
A workshop on Mining and the Extractive Sector Taxation was held in Santa Cruz de la Sierra, Bolivia, on November 27-29, 2024. This workshop was organized by CIAT, the Spanish Cooperation (AECID) and the National Tax Service (SIN). Its main objective was to raise participants’ awareness of the importance of mining taxation, analyze the value chains of the extractive sector, and exchange experiences on the tax treatment and control of companies in the sector.
During the sessions, key topics were discussed, including the interaction between tax policies, mining resources, transfer pricing, tax treaties and tax risk control processes. In addition, case studies were developed for the active participation of the attendees and the exchange of ideas.
The event was attended by experts from the IGF, the OECD, the Chilean Internal Revenue Service (SII), the Ministry of Energy and Mines of the Dominican Republic, the National Superintendency of Customs and Tax Administration (SUNAT) of Peru, the State Agency of Tax Administration (AEAT) of Spain, the National Tax and Customs Directorate (DIAN) of Colombia, and the Internal Revenue Service (SRI) of Ecuador.
In conclusion, the challenges and opportunities inherent in the taxation of the mining sector were highlighted, underscoring the need to implement sound tax policies that balance investment attraction with effective tax collection. It also highlighted the importance of strengthening collaboration between tax administrations, mining companies and other key stakeholders to optimize tax compliance and ensure a fair taxation that contributes to the sustainable development of countries with extractive activities.
