Augusto Azael Perez Azcarraga

Azael Pérez Azcárraga has more than 28 years of experience in the customs field. He is currently a senior economist in the Fiscal Affairs Department of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), where he coordinates capacity building for customs administrations in Latin America, the Caribbean, and East and Southern Africa.

Throughout his career, Mr. Perez has led major modernization reforms, helping countries improve trade facilitation and customs collection efficiency while securing their borders.

Prior to his current position, he worked for 17 years in Mexico’s tax and customs administration, holding various positions including: Customs Administrator, Deputy Director General of Foreign Trade Tax Intelligence and Deputy Director General of Post-Dispatch Audit. In addition, he has authored and co-authored several technical papers published by the IMF, CIAT and USAID, and was accredited by the World Customs Organization as a Customs Modernization Expert.
