The Guyana Revenue Authority (GRA) is committed to strengthening processes under the CIAT-SECO Cooperation Program
The strategic alliance between CIAT ad the State Secretariat for Economic Affairs of Switzerland (SECO) made possible the procurement of resources to support the strengthening of the Guyana Revenue Authority, with the ultimate goal of promoting the mobilization of internal resources for the country’s development.
Since 2015, technical assistance have been provided in three areas, which represent much of the tax administration processes: risk management, control of multinational companies and collection and enforcement processes.
In order to evaluate the progress of these projects and define next steps for implementing improvements, on August 24 and 25, 2016, officials from the International Cooperation and Taxation Directorate of the CIAT Executive Secretariat met in the city of Georgetown with officials from different areas involved in the projects, and with the GRA authorities. Also during the same week, the acting experts in each of the projects participated in thematic meetings, in order to assess recommendations and the possibility to implement them in the short, medium or long term.
As a result, it was considered essential to promote reforms in tax procedures, both regulatory and administrative, implementing information systems and continue training the staff. Similarly, to accompany these improvements, an appropriate long-term investment in information technology from the Government of Guyana is expected.
The CIAT Executive Secretariat is grateful to SECO and underlines the commitment of the Guyanese authorities to capitalize on this valuable support.
