October 20, 2008 – Under the co-sponsorship of the South African Revenue Service-SARS, the 2008 CIAT Technical Conference was held on September 29 through October 2, in the city of Johannesburg.

The SARS Commissioner, Mr. Pravin Gordhan, inaugurated and highlighted the importance of the Technical Conference held with the participation of 26 member countries, which together with representatives from other countries and international organizations and institutions with which CIAT maintains interinstitutional relationships totaled 44 delegations.

Following four days of presentations, meetings, discussions and integration among the participating delegations, Mr. Nelson Hernández, General Director of Income of Uruguay, summarized and made the final comments on the most relevant aspects of the lectures.

In turn, Mr. Juan Hernández Batista, General Director of Internal Taxes of the Dominican Republic made the closing statement, thanking South Africa as host country and especially Mr. Edgard Kieswetter, SARS Director of Operations for his excellent work as national counterpart and coordinator of the Technical Conference Organizing Committee.

Finally, Mr. Juan Hernández extended a most cordial invitation to the next CIAT General Assembly scheduled to be held in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic on April 20-23, 2009, and whose main theme will be: A Modern Vision of the Tax Administration.  In turn, Mr. Enrico Martino, Head of International Relations of the Ministry of Economy and Finance of Italy also invited the participants to the next Technical Conference in Naples, Italy, in the week of October 19, 2009, for discussing the Strengthening of the Tax Administration’s Capacity.

The main theme of the Technical Conference in Johannesburg was: “Topics Emerging from the Agenda of the Tax Administrations”.
